Woodland Play Area
The large climbing unit has now been removed ready for installation of the new bespoke unit. The contractor has installed the zip line and climbing boulder and is continuing to install some of the other play equipment in the accessible area. The construction of the retaining wall for the accessible area is due to be finished by the end of this week. Once all equipment and seating is installed, work will begin on safety surfacing throughout the area.

Family Picnic & Play Area
All benches, the trampoline and swings have been installed. The bike track has been shaped and is ready for tarmacking. Tree planting and turfing has been completed. Installation of acoustic equipment, stone sets, bins and safety surfacing will take place over the next week or two to complete this area.

Access Improvements
Access improvements are currently taking place in Jervis Lum. New steps with handrail and new bridge will improve the link the new housing being built on Beeches Bank and Park Grange Drive into Norfolk Heritage Park. The Public Arts Officer will be working to develop some public art which help signpost this route from the housing.

Background to the project
The play areas in Norfolk Park were over 15 years old and in need of renewal. There is now funding allocated which is allowing us to deliver a fantastic new playground.

Consultation took place on these proposals during April and May 2017. Feedback was very positive with almost all respondents being happy or very happy with the proposal. Comments suggested that people particularly welcomed the new picnic area, the range of new equipment and the provision of a buggy and wheelchair accessible area in the Woodland Play Area.

  • The large wooden climbing tower structure will be removed and replaced with a brand new steel climbing structure with a fantastic range of play features. It will be on the same footprint to avoid the need for extensive new excavations which will protect the large mature trees in this area.
  • New equipment including a cantilever swing, climbing boulders, zip line and toddler climbing unit will be installed with bark safety surfacing.
  • A level accessible area with synthetic carpet safety surfacing will be created in the top zone of this playground with inclusive equipment including a basket spring, disability swing, wheelchair accessible roundabout and inclusive springer. This area will be retained with a low retaining wall.
  • All large mature healthy trees in the playground area will be retained. Three smaller, poor quality trees will be removed.
